Transportation
Fairfield is located 50 miles west of the Mississippi River on Highway 34 in Southeast Iowa. The Highway 163/63/34-34 corridor, a four-lane major highway connects Fairfield to Des Moines on the west and Burlington to the east. Running north-south through Fairfield is Iowa Highway 1, leading north to Iowa City and south to the Missouri state border. Fairfield lies 50 miles southwest of Iowa City, Iowa and 187 miles northwest of St. Louis, Missouri.
In 2006, the Fairfield Municipal Airport was renovated. The Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids is the closest international commercial airport, approximately 90 miles to the north.
Fairfield has 24 motor freight carriers servicing its local businesses inter- and intra-state transportation needs. Our five local terminals support the community’s motor freight carrier infrastructure. Fairfield is served by Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BSNF) Railway. With rail spur-equipped sites ready for development, Fairfield presents rail-dependent industry a viable option. Greyhound Lines affiliates Jefferson Lines and Burlington Trailways provide bus service to Fairfield. Amtrak carries passengers west-east on the California Zephyr, with passenger stations in Mount Pleasant (25 miles east of Fairfield) and Ottumwa (25 miles west).
